Last verified: October 7, 2026. We make Tatany, which includes one of the tools below. Every other fact links to the page we read it on, and we point out where a free tool does the job.
What a tattoo stencil generator does
A tattoo stencil generator turns a photo or drawing into flat black linework on white, the kind an artist prints onto thermal paper and transfers to skin. Some tools return contour lines only. Others keep shading, or redraw the design more cleanly. An artist still sizes the stencil, adjusts line weights and makes the final transfer.
How we compared
On October 7, 2026 we read each tool's product page, pricing page and App Store listing. We compared what you can upload, what comes out, what is free, what it costs and how you export it. We did not run a scored line-quality test, so this page does not rank tools by output quality.
The short answer
- Free, in the browser, no account: Ink Studio AI or TattoosAI, both for clean outlines.
- Free with any image and many line styles: MakeLineArt.
- Printing at an exact size from the browser: Tatany Pro or Studio, which export a print PDF at the width you set.
- Working on an iPhone next to a thermal printer: StencilPro or StencilStudio.

Tatany
Tatany is our own tool, so weigh this section accordingly. Its tattoo stencil generator accepts a photo of a healed tattoo, a pencil sketch or flash, up to 5 MB. Three modes cover different jobs: Stencil Outline keeps only the contour lines an artist traces, Original Tattoo lifts the artwork with its shading onto white, and AI Design Upgrade redraws a faded or uneven piece more cleanly.
On Pro and Studio plans the result can be exported as an A4 or Letter print PDF at an exact width in centimetres, mirrored if needed, with a 5 cm ruler to check the scale. A run costs 10 credits; a free account gets 15 welcome credits and one free standard generation per day while signed in, and its downloads carry a small watermark. Unlike the free browser tools below, it is not free without an account.
Ink Studio AI
Ink Studio's Tattoo to Stencil is free, needs no account and runs in your browser. Choose clean outline, high contrast or pencil sketch, adjust a sensitivity slider and download a black-and-white PNG. For most people who just want outlines from a clear photo, this is the place to start.
TattoosAI
The TattoosAI stencil maker is also free with no account and processes the image on your device. It uses edge detection and returns outlines without tone, with controls for line sensitivity and smoothing. It works well on high-contrast designs and less well when shading carries the image.
Tat Ink
Tat Ink's tattoo to stencil tool takes a tattoo photo, sketch, flash or digital art and offers a cleaner outline, stronger contrast or more detailed linework. The page says it flattens skin curvature and reconstructs hidden parts. It draws on Tat Ink's free daily generations and paid plans from $8.79 a month.
BlackInk AI
BlackInk includes a stencil converter for your own uploaded designs, with remix variations. Unlimited image-to-stencil is part of Pro Unlimited, which costs $15 a month. It suits people who already use BlackInk to generate designs.
Stencil AI
Stencil AI is a web tool for photos, sketches and screenshots, with line-art style presets and a tattoo extractor. New users get 10 credits with no card, and each run uses 2. Paid plans start at $9.99 a month for 300 credits; paid exports are watermark-free.
MakeLineArt
MakeLineArt is not tattoo-specific, but it converts JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC images in the browser into 21 line-art and sketch styles, including a stencil style. It says it is free with no sign-up and no watermark; the site shows ads.
iPhone apps
- StencilPro makes stencils for thermal printers from a photo of a design. Two stencils are free, and paid packs start at $9.99. It does not accept photos of faces.
- StencilStudio returns black-and-white linework from photos and existing tattoos, can bend the stencil to fit a body part, and exports PNG or PDF or prints with AirPrint. In-app purchases start at $9.99.
- Stencify turns photos or artwork into stencils and adds text-to-tattoo and AI try-on. Two premium uses are free; it costs $4.99 a week or $47.99 a year.
Tips for a cleaner stencil
- Shoot straight on, in even light. Glare and a curved angle are the main reasons a line breaks or merges.
- Crop close to the design. Background and skin around the tattoo add stray marks.
- Zoom into the small parts such as lettering, fingers and fine dotwork before you print; that is where lines drop out.
- Check the size on paper. Print at the final width and measure before the transfer.
